Engaging Customers with Internet of Things

Derrick Oigiagbe

IOT is one of today’s hot topics, so it wasn’t surprising that it was a major theme at Salesforce’s recent Dreamforce conference in San Francisco. IOT is the concept that our devices and machines can be connected to the internet to allow actions that make our lives easier.

Just think how IOT might work. Let’s take a city where bridges have sensors connected to the internet, and your car is connected too. When a bridge sensor detects a fault, it communicates a warning to all cars so you know to avoid the risky bridge (and the resulting backed up traffic).

Or maybe someone in your family has a heart problem. He also has a heartbeat sensor. This sensor automatically schedules doctor appointments and will call an ambulance if it notices prolonged irregular heartbeats. This takes a lot of worry out of your life.

IOT definitely comes to mind when we imagine new ways of engaging customers. Retailers already use IOT with RFID and "convenience technology," which is the concept of providing personalized interactions and marketing materials for customers. But there are so many more possibilities. How about fast and easy real-time feedback on a company’s services and products? How could other industries such as car manufacturing, healthcare and financial services-- just to name a few-- transform their customer interactions?
